Thick.<\/p>\n

Stamped.<\/p>\n

Mr. Lawson sat across from me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat your aunt would take everything visible.\u201d<\/p>\n

My breath caught.<\/p>\n

My heart pounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would they do that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo keep her distracted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then he slid the folder toward me.<\/p>\n

My hands shook as I opened it.<\/p>\n

Properties.<\/p>\n

Accounts.<\/p>\n

Investments.<\/p>\n

All in my name.<\/p>\n

Smiling.<\/p>\n

She thought she had won.<\/p>\n
